Vaddukoddai

Sri Lanka

Vaddukoddai, known to the Europeans as Batecotte, was a prosperous fishing village. A saltwater river ran past the village. The church was one of the few with several floors and dated from the Portuguese period. The church hall housed a school for religious education for the local inhabitants. The church was still in use as late as 1990. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
