As elsewhere in Ceylon the Portuguese introduced the Catholic faith to Udupiddi, once known as Ureputti. The Company aimed in turn to convert the Catholics of Ceylon to Protestantism. Nevertheless, the Portuguese Catholic influence remained strong. In order to counter this influence it was decided in the 1690s actively to stimulate the growth of a local Protestant elite. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
