Limbotte was situated a little to the north of Gorontalo in northern Sulawesi. The Company frequently ran into problems with the Spanish here. The Company had established a presence in northern Sulawesi in order to safeguard its monopoly position on the island archipelagos of Ambon and Banda. The trade in spices was not a motivating factor, as the quality of the available spices was inferior to those of Ambon and Banda.
