Tanjungpinang

Riouw, today known as Tanjungpinang, was a major port in the Malacca Straits. From the second half of the 18th century onwards, the VOC made several attempts to gain control of the harbour at Riouw, where the private trade in tin was concentrated. Riouw was known as a staple market, where people made their living from free trade. During the VOC era, the town fell under the authority of the Sultan of Jahore. The Company wished to subject this port to its rule, but the sultan was able to prevent this. It was only in the late 18th century, around 1784, that the VOC appointed a resident to gather the tolls. However the free trade in tin, which the VOC regarded as illicit trade, continued.
