Celam

The VOC built the small fort of Culenborg in the compound at Selamme or Selaman on the northern point of the island of Lonthor. It was built in 1636 on the recommendation of the governor general, Antonie van Diemen. When Van Diemen visited the compound in 1638 he named the fort after the city of his birth. Its situation on top of a hill meant the fort functioned as a key surveillance point. Some three to eight soldiers were generally stationed here.
