To defend the interior of southern Ceylon against the king of Kandy, the VOC built a number of jungle forts of which Katuwana was one. Because the European VOC soldiers were unable to withstand the extreme climatic conditions, the Company relied mainly on local soldiers to man this fort. But in any case the fort was so small that there was hardly room to swivel a cannon.
