Larike was, until 1617, under the regime of Captain Hitoe, whose headquarters were based in Hila. The Company promised to aid the inhabitants of Larike against this hostile captain, but in exchange for this aid the VOC demanded a trading post. Cloves from the surrounding area were traded in Larike, where 'Fort Rotterdam' was situated.
