Coastline profiles of the Tukang Besi archipelago, Buru and Ambelau

On their way to the Molccas, the ships of the Tweede Schipvaart (Second Expedition) passed south of Sulawesi and its adjacent islands, and reached the Tukang-Besi archipalgo, before crossing into the Moluccas proper and reaching Buru and Ambelau.

On the top left, we see two profiles of the Tukang-Besi Archipelago. This archipelago was mistaken by Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck, helmsman of the Amsterdam, to be one island which he named Kadeipa or ‘Tikabesse Kadeipa’, likely conflating the name of the archipelago with that of one of its principal islands, Kaledupa. He mentions that the king of Buton also rules over this ‘island’. Jolinck mentions is a place where supplies of coconuts, ‘miannes’, sweet potatoes and fish can be obtained.
