The 'Dutch part' of Surabaya, across the river, is clearly visible. The view has been executed from the vantage point of the Chinese quarter and the market; to the right is a Chinese gentleman with a pajong (parasol). to the extreme right in the bend on the near side of the river is the Indonesian part of Surabaya. As such Surabaya actually comprised three villages in Rach's time.

To the right on the river is the ferry.
