Bird's eye view of the region around Nagasaki
Anoniem / Anonymous
Screen depicting a bird's eye view of the region around Nagasaki, with in the centre several buildings and some vessels in the waters around the many islands.
This screen forms part of a series of six, among others the NagasakiVI35A.
Several of the vessels are flying the Dutch flag.
This screen belongs to a series of six, including NagasakiVI35B.
On the other screen (NagasakiVI35A) belonging to this series, Deshima is shown right and the temple Shufukuji in the centre. On this screen a foreign vessel is depicted with alongside the word 'ekeresu': in the bay of Nagasaki.
The date and artist are not known, but it is thought to have been painted around 1673, when the English vessel the 'Exeter' (?) visited Nagasaki. The painting style is reminiscent of the 'rakugairakucuu' style; it is assumed that the artist was a so-called canoe painter from Kyoto, and not a native of Nagasaki.
