View of the market at Batavia
Rach, Johannes
View of the market at Batavia, situated on the west bank of the 'Groote Rivier' (Great River) or the Ciliwung.
The artist is depicted standing next to the Hoenderpasar bridge. The name of this bridge, 'hoender' (fowl), refers to that part of the market. To the right one can see the buildings where the fowl, such as geese and ducks, were sold.
In reality the number of sellers and market visitors under the tamarind trees would have been far greater than shown here.
