View of the Tijgersgracht from the south.
The occupants of the carriage are linked to the Van Riemsdijk family; the carriage is preceded by two so-called 'forerunners', slaves who were made to run in front; riding on the back of the carriage are slaves bearing parasols, one for each passenger. A man on horseback rides behind the carriage as protection.
The Van Riemsdijk residence is situated alongside the playhouse on the canal.
On the far side of the canal two European men sit smoking beneath a tamarind tree.
