Grissee was an important port and storage depot for food, pepper and textiles. The Dutch had difficulty in establishing a firm foothold here because they did not have the particular textiles the Javanese wanted; nor could they compete with the low prices of the Portuguese. The trading post was closed down when the Company found that it could not prevent its competitors from exporting.
