Plan of the redoubt Leiden

Bernhardi, Heinrich Ludwig Ditloff

Title Leupe: Plan van de geprojecteerde Batterie beneeden Commewyne, strekkende tot defentie van die rivier enz.

Work on the redoubt Leiden on the eastern bank opposite Fort Nieuw Amsterdam began in 1755, after the completion of the redoubt Purmerend. Andries Lodewijk Calvi, who had designed Prumerend, had probably also already produced a design for this fortification, but it was only built in 1754 under his successor as Inspector of Fortifications, the engineer Matheus Christoph Bernhardy. This is his fairly rough project plan, showing the new redoubt, as in the case of Purmerend, completely encircled by a moat. A comparison with Bernhardy’s elaborated, definitive plan of Leiden when construction began in October 1755 on VEL2053 reveals that the plan was followed almost to the letter.
