Map of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers

Title Leupe: “Caerte ofte vertooninge van de Rivieren van Suriname en Commewyne met verscheyde creken uyt deselve spruytende, als Para, Surinoo en Cotteca ende ander meer, gelyck die nu tegenwoordich bewoont verden.”

This concerns a reproduction of a rare map mentioning the plantations around the Suriname and Commewijne rivers. Only the names of the owners of the plantations are shown; their extent or borders are not given. In addition, the town of Paramaribo and the adjacent fort of Zeelandia are named. Three illustrations can be found on the depicted lands: the upper one shows a sugar mill and two slaves. The one below that a transaction between European merchants and an native American cooking a cauldron. Finally, in the middle, a native village is shown with two inhabitants and a bad-tempered jaguar. The banderole is beautifully illustrated too with a native sitting on top of a big lizard, a monkey, two armadillos, and trade wares. In addition, fleets are drawn in the sea at the bottom of the map. The name of the publishers and printer are unknown. The original copper print was burned in 1931.
