Plan for the Purmerend redoubt at the mouth of the Suriname River

Anoniem / Anonymous

Title Leupe: Plan van de rivier van Suriname en Commowine, met het geprojecteerde fort, dienende tot dekkinge voor gemelde rivier.

The plans for the improvement of the fortifications in Surinam which was agreed upon in 1733, projected two auxiliary forts on the opposite banks at the mouths of the Surinam and the Commewijne to back Fort Nieuw Amsterdam. Construction of the first, the earthen redoubt Purmerend on the western bank of the Surinam, was commenced in 1748, based on a design by Ensign Andries Lodewijk (Andreas Ludovicus) Calvi, who held the position of Acting-Inspector of Fortifications between 1744 and 1754. This anonymous map dating from c. 1735-1745, corresponds with parts of Desmarestz’s plan (see VEL2032), and seems to indicate that the auxiliary fort was originally planned slightly south of its final location. Interestingly, the design for the redoubt (D) was drawn on a separate slip of paper which was pasted onto the map.
