Map of the Berbice and Canje rivers

Cederkreutz, Christiaan T. Frederik / Keulen II, Johannes van

Title Leupe: Nieuwe en zeer accurate generaale caart van de twee Rivieren Berbice en Canje, met alle desselfs Plantagien en gronden enz.

This map followed the rejection of the proposal made by De Veije from 1764 (VEL1571).

In 1769 the directors decided to retain Fort Nassau as the main settlement after all, and consequently there is no reference whatsoever to De Veije’s plans in this 1771 general map of Berbice by Christiaan Frederik Theodosius Cederkreutz.

The location and quantity of plantation appears to be copied from De Veije’s map.

North is upper right.

The Dutch National Archive collection houses four similar copies of this map, VEL1572A-D, which are not separately included in this database.

Scale-bar of 200 Rhineland rods = 70 ‘strepen’.

Please contact Nationaal Archief for reuse and copyrights.
