Map of the estuary of the Essequibo River with existing plantations and lands yet to be allocated (Plan XIII)

Kanne, Carl Christiaan / Heneman, Johan Christoph von

Title Leupe: Kaart van een gedeelte der Colonie Essequebo.

This map is a copy of the one made by Heneman in 1774-5, zie VEL1529.

During his second visit to Surinam, between the end of 1772 and 1778, Johan Christoph Heneman was posted to Demerara and Essequibo for one-and-a-half years in 1774 and 1775. On the orders of the WIC, he explored the possibilities for establishing a better defence system in these colonies and drew up a project plan for a canal connection between the two rivers.

This maps shows the location of the islands in the Essequibo estuary. On other maps of Heneman from this period, plans are developed for reconstructing the posts on these islands.

A nearly identical copy of this map, VEL1530B, has not been separately included in this database.

Scale-bar of 4000 Rhineland rods = 152 ‘strepen’.
