View of Buitenzorg from the south

Rach, Johannes

View of Buitenzorg, anno 2002 Istana Bogor.

Depicted are two villas, each measuring 30 x 15 metres.

Behind them, in the distance, one can see the tower of a small fort, Fort Philippine, which housed a garrison of 16 soldiers.

It was the original intention that the two wings should be linked by a central building, but in the event none of the 18th century owners carried this out.

The villas were most likely built on commission for governor general Van der Parra. A villa had been built earlier by governor general Van Imhoff, but this was destroyed in the war against the king of Bantam in 1752.

The governor general lived on the right, to the left was a church.

In Rach's time the estate comprised 236 square kilometres.
