Portrait of Jan Valckenburgh (1623-'67), director general of the Coast of Guinea.
Valckenburgh was twice appointed director general of the Coast of Guinea (now Ghana) and resided in Elmina from 1656-1659 and from 1663-1667.
He is depicted in three-quarters view wearing a coat of armour, standing next to a table before a window and holding his commander's rod in his right hand. Behind the table is a black house slave, holding a gold reward medal.
Depicted in the background is Elmina's castle.
