Hindu shrine and mosque
Doetecum, Baptista van
This coloured engraving shows a hindu shrine to the left, and a mosque to the right. The image from Linschoten's Itinerario belongs with a chapter about the various religions in India. Both the text of the chapter and the captions with the image express disapproval of non-christian religions: the caption calls the image of the Hindu shrine a "horrible depiction of the Indian idols". The caption with the mosque remarks that the Islamic "sect has pervaded almost the entire orient."
