The return fleet of Pieter van den Broecke

After a long career with the VOC in Asia, in December 1629 Pieter van den Broecke was permitted to return to the Netherlands. He sailed from Batavia with a fleet of 9 ships under his command. At the Cape of Good Hope the crew became unruly and mutinous, prompting Van den Broecke to resume the voyage. While sailing through the Atlantic the ship Dordrecht caught fire and burnt down. The other ships safely arrived in The Netherlands in June and July 1630. The image shows the fleet of 9 ships that departed Batavia: 1. The Utrecht, 2. The Hollandia, 3. The Prins Hendrik, 4. The Leyden, 5. The Rotterdam, 6. The Dordrecht, 7. The Gallias, 8. The Delft and 9. The Zeepaerdt.
