The expedition of Olivier van Noort at Puerto Deseado

From late September to late October 1599 Olivier van Noort lay in the rivier at Porto Desire with his three remaining ships. Here he found many penguins and sea lions, of which many were killed to supply the ships. On shore the expedition found graves of the indigenous people of the area. They saw some buffalo’s, deer and ‘ostriches’, which were probably rhea. Three men of the expedition were attacked and killed at Porto Desire while Van Noort had gone inland with a group of men.

On the image we see several events that happened at Porto Desire. Below we probably see a group of men being attacked by the indigenous people armed with bow and arrow. Groups of soldiers walk through the landscapes on the top and bottom. Closer to the shore a fire has been made and there are two ostriches walking around.
