The expedition at São Sebastian
Olivier van Noort’s fleet stayed at the island São Sebastian for a bit more than a week in late February 1599. There was abundant fish at the island, as well as parrots and seagulls to hunt and edible seaweeds and herbs. While there, six men of the crew were attacked by indigenous people after going ashore with a boat. They were sent by the Portuguese and followed the Dutch from Rio de Janeiro.
This image shows how the Dutch are fishing at São Sebastian with nets on the left and right. In the middle they are collecting water. A chaloupe is being repaired. On the bottom left men are rowing in boats to go ashore, where six of them would be attacked.
