World map with the voyages of Joris van Spilbergen and Jacob le Maire

This map from the publication of Joris van Spilbergen’s 1614-1617 voyage shows the entire globe as it was known at the time to the cartographer. The map is highly detailed and also depicts and marks many places that were not visited by Van Spilbergen. The map shows two voyages. The dotted line is the route followed by the expedition of Joris van Spilbergen. The other line is the voyage of Jacob le Maire and Willem Schouten around Cape Horne. Le Maire and Schouten departed in 1615 and arrived in Jacatra only weeks apart in October 1616. The journal of Jacob le Maire is also included in the same publication as Van Spilbergen’s journey.
