Coastline profile of Tukangbesi

Laerle, Joris Joostensz.

After spending several months at the Banda islands, the Moluccan fleet of the Fifth Expedition returned to Java in June 1602. On the way they passed the Tukangbesi islands to the southeast of Sulawesi. Joris Joostensz. Laerle drew this coastline profile of the islands he observed there in the journal of the Gelderland. The text on the top left says: “This reef stretches mostly from west-northwest and east-southeast and is about 2 miles long”. The text below it says “This is the southside of Ticabessa”. On the top right, it says that the image depicts the islands of TIcabessa Cudepa if one sails between them and the opening stretches about southwest by south and northeast by north, which at its narrowest is a mile wide. Below this text it says: “This is the northside of Ticabessa”.
