Coastline profile of Sulawesi near the Strait of Selayar
Laerle, Joris Joostensz.
After winning a naval engagement against the Portuguese at Bantam in early January, the Moluccan fleet of the Fifth Expedition continued to their actual destination: the Moluccan islands of Banda and Ternate. On the way to the Moluccas the ships passed the island Sulawesi.
This drawing was possibly made by Joris Joostensz. Laerle on 25 January 1602 in the journal of the Gelderland when it was to his left. The panels shows Sulawesi near the Strait of Selayar seen from south-southwest to northwest. The mountain is here simply named “mountain of Celebus”.
