Map of the expedition route along Russia's north coast
Linschoten, Jan Huygen van / Doetechum, Joannes / Baptista à / van / Ketel, Gerard
This map shows the expedition route along what is now the Russian coast, from ‘Toxar’(the island of Sengeyskiy) to the west side of the Yamal peninsula. North is below. Like many of the images in Linschoten’s book, the map shows the Dutch names that the expedition members generously dealt out along the way: the island of Nieuw Walcheren, the island of Enkhuizen (Vaygach), Hollandia Nova (the Russian north coast), the New North Sea (Karazee), Westfrisia Nova (the Yamal Peninsula) etcetera.
The map is illuminated with ships, arctic animals and the coats of arms of various cities and provinces. From Jan Huygen van Linschoten’s Voyagie ofte Schipvaart, an account of the first and second expeditions Dutch fleets undertook along the north coast of present-day Russia in order to find a northeast passage to Asia.
