Map of the arctic

Map in polar projection of the arctic, identified by the inscription as made on the basis of the notes of Willem Barentsz. The map specifically shows the route of the third and last Barentsz expedition of 1596-1597, and shows the expedition ships. In the map, the discoveries of the Dutch arctic expeditions have been used. Strikingly, the arctic continent which was generally assumed to exist in the late 16th century, is not depicted, and the map is generally very reticent in showing regions which had not been recently explored.
