Map of Novaya Zemlya and the Russian coast
Veer, Gerrit de
The map shows the west coast of Novaya Zemlya as explored by the Dutch Arctic expeditions, and specifically outlines the route of the return voyage from the Safe House, on the northeast coast of Nova Zembla, to the Russian port town of Kola. The illustrations, in addition to sea monsters and Dutch ships, depict some specific episodes from the third voyage, including the Safe House, the expedition ship lifted from the water, and a fight with a polar bear.
From the Wahrhafftige Relation, the German version of Gerrit de Veer’s journal, published in 1598. (See under ‘documentation’ for details.)
