The ship gets stuck in Ice Harbour, late August 1596
Veer, Gerrit de
The image combines various events of 26 and 27 august 1597. In the foreground, crew members who were on the ice to clear a passage for the ship, jump back on board for safety. In the background, the ship is pushed out of the water by the ice and some of the crewmembers make landfall at Ice Harbour. From the Wahrhafftige Relation, the German version of Gerrit de Veer’s journal, published in 1598. (See under ‘documentation’ for details.)
