Chart of Île-à-Vache

Title Leupe: Kaart van I. de Vacca en een gedeelte der Zuidkust van Spangnola. This map from the workshop of Johannes Vingboons was based on a map by Hessel Gerritsz dating from c. 1630. Hessel Gerritsz drew several maps in different versions of the Île-à-Vache, which is located south of Hispaniola at the modern Les Cayes. These maps show much variation between them, which was likely the result of Gerritsz’ use of charts and descriptions from different ship’s logs. As can be derived from the comment at the upper left, the island provided fresh water. The island and the nearby coast were also good spots for maintaining ships.
