General map of the Colony of Suriname, sheet 4
This sheet is part of an overview of the entire colony of Suriname, made for the directors of the WIC residing in the Dutch Republic. This overview is chiefly meant to delineate the main area of plantations around the Commewijne and Suriname Rivers and to give a geographical impression of the uncultivated lands outside this zone. While the borders of the plantations are drawn tightly, nature is described in general terms like 'Highlands with forest' or 'Mud with sand'. Company gardens, posts, creeks and 'Indian' villages are indicated too. The border area between the Suriname and Berbice colony is shown here. A red line divides these two colonies.
North is down.
Several scale-bars are used, see the description on the first page of this collection of maps. Basic scale-bar of 1 German mile = 40 ‘strepen’.
