Map of plantations on Hog Island

des Touches, Albert Sirauz / Bolten, Jan

Title Leupe: Kaart van 't Varken Eyland in Rio Essequebo enz.

Just as in Surinam and the other colonies along the Wild Coast, in the eighteenth century the plantation areas on the banks of the Essequibo gradually moved to more accessible parts around the lower reaches of the river, the adjacent coastal regions and the islands of the estuary.

This cadastral maps or certificate of registry of reclamation projects, shows plantations on the Hog Island (Varkenseiland).

The map provides a elaborate insight into the geographical features of the landscape and depicts nearby islands as well as currents.

The various buildings, plantations and other estates are designated with the names of owners, reference numbers and descriptions. Many of the lands are not yet cultivated. The Duyvenburgh plantation is explicitly mentioned in the description.

The map is a copy.

This map is part of a collection of cadastral surveys (see VEL1537 t/m VEL1542).
