This map was made by Pierre-Louis de Saffon (1724-1784), a Frenchman who, as of c. 1760, was employed in Demerara as a sworn surveyor and also later became a plantation owner there. Four surveys of lots of the east bank of the Demerara River are shown here. The leftmost map shows the plantation of mr. van den Heuvel which turns out to measure 656 Surinamese acres, that is c. 282 hectares. To its right, the land of mr. Lebou measures 250 Surinamese acres, that is 107.5 hectares. On the upper right, the land of captain Savellani is 500 acres, or 215 hectares, and the lot below it belonging to mr. Markoe is 250 acres, or 107.6 hectares.
