Map of land around the Commewijne and Cottica rivers
Sas, Johan
Title Leupe: "Kaarte figueratijve representerende d'rivieren Comwine en Cottica en desselfs uijtstroomende creeken met alle d'landen soo verde."
This map of the Commewijne and Cottica rivers was made in the Republic in 1701 by Johan Sas, about whom nothing more is known. Although it is in manuscript, it was not an original work but a hand-drawn version of the printed map published in 1688 by Frederik de Wit with the title Caerte van de Rivieren Suriname en Commowijne (Map of the Surinam and Commowijne Rivers). Remarkably, a few of the toponyms which are wrongly spelled on the printed map, for instance, ‘Panlet creecke’ for Paulus Creek, are recorded correctly on Sas’ map.
