Map of the Suriname River at Parnassusberg
Hengevelt, Jacob
Titel Leupe: Figurative afteykening van een gedeelte der rivier Suriname, beginnende van de oude plantagie van van den Poel, tot boven de Parnasberg en daarop geplaatste brandwagt.
In 1713, a military post was established at what was known as the Parnassusberg (Mount Parnassus), near the later plantation Berg en Dal, a steep hill directly on the Surinam river. Five years later, 'mining works' under the direction of the self-proclaimed mining expert Salomon Sanders commenced here as well. On this map dating from 1721 by the surveyor Jacob Hengevelt, and showing a large stretch of river, there is no indication at all of these works, even though the mine was still fully operational. Only sandbanks, creeks, islands and cliffs are indicated.
North is right.
