Roughly 9 kilometres upstream of Jodensavanne, the Government ran the ‘the Stone-Blasting Works’ Worsteling Jacobs (The Wrestling of Jacob), a quarry on the western bank of the river that was bought on the account of the Society of Suriname in 1766 so as to be assured of a reliable, relatively cheap supply of natural stone ‘to maintain the fortresses’. Its location in the wider context, the specific situation and land of Worsteling Jacobs and a plan of the local buildings of the Society, plus another two cross sections, are very skilfully depicted in this map.
