Draft of the Court of Civil Justice
Tilhenn, Joseph
Title Leupe: "Plan en profielen "van het geprojecteerde gebouw voor den Hove van Civile Justitie" te Paramaribo (bis)."
This is a design for the renovation of the Court of Civil Justice on the Plein (‘Square’; later Oranjeplein) in Paramaribo which was commissioned in 1790. Until 1773 the building had been a private two-storey house, last owned by the former officer Adam Hendrik Lodewijk, Baron van Wangenheim. When the latter returned to Europe in 1773, the house was bought from the sale of his property by the Government to be used as premises for the Court of Civil Justice and its associated offices. However, in 1790, the partly timber building proved to be so ramshackle it was decided that the top storey should be demolished and, after a thorough restoration and rearrangement, the rest of the building would be given a new roof, for which this 1791 copy of the architectural drawing shows the planned design. The plan was never executed as such: after the work on the renovation commenced, the building was found to be in such a bad shape that it was entirely demolished and a new brick building was constructed in its place.
