Map of Paramaribo
Meester, Roeland de / Hengevelt, Jacob
Title Leupe: Kaart van de nieuw vergeven grondt aan Jan C. Everhard aan Paramaribo.
This 1722 cadastral plan of the domestic premises and adjoining plots in the Gravenstraat opposite the Oranjestraat (Mr. J.C. de Mirandastraat), on the corner of what would later be known as the Grote Combéweg, is one of very few surviving maps of Paramaribo from before the mid-18th century. In 1717, the residential property with the land behind it (together ACMLA) was assigned to Councillor Willem van Haaren by Governor Johan Mahony (1716-1717). On the street side, he had the ‘brick dwelling house’ constructed. After various rebuildings in the intervening period, at the beginning of the twentieth century it became the seat of the States of Surinam.
North is upper left.
Scale-bar of 10 chains of 5½ rods or 66 Rhineland feet = [approximately 1 : 730].
