Sanana

Sanana, or Sulabessie, was the most densely populated of the Sula Islands. The strategic importance of its fort, Fort Claverblad, was probably tied up with the VOC's attempt to secure a monopoly of the clove trade on the Moluccas. It is unclear whether the VOC ever established a permanent base at the fort, which was later rebuilt and renamed 'De Verwachting'.
