From 1667 the Company had a gold and a silver mine in Salido. The VOC brought slaves from Madagascar to work in the mines. Because of the unhealthy conditions in the mines the mortality rate among miners was high. The gold and silver was shipped to the Dutch Republic in the form of ore, because it was too expensive to process the precious metal on the spot.
