The settlement is named after a general Hulft who lived and worked in this village just outside Colombo in 1656 during his period of service in Ceylon. During this period Hullfsdorp functioned as the headquarters of the dessave of Colombo. The dessave was the most senior official in the so-called 'dessavonij', the administrative district of Colombo. These days Hullfsdorp is a neighbourhood in Colombo, which is known for the Wolvendaal church built by the Company there in 1746.
