Akuressa lay on the Nilwala rivier to the northwest of Matara. It was a secondary VOC settlement that served as a support base for the Katuwana fort in the interior. Together with the Hakmana fort, Akuressa was set up in order to improve the link and communications between the coastal town of Matara and the border garrison at Katuwana. Neither of these two minor forts has survived.
