Vengurla

The VOC opened a base in Vengurla in 1637. This town was an important market for VOC mace and cloves from the Molucca Islands, and was itself a supplier of pepper. In 1673 Batavia decided to place this base under the control of Surat. When the VOC conquered the south coast of India a few years later, Cochin took over Vengurla's role as the principal transshipment port on India's southern coast. The VOC deserted Vengurla in 1685.
