Alang, one of the biggest Christian towns on Ambon, lay in the south of the island at a strategic point on Ambon harbour. Towards the end of the 17th century the VOC decided to establish additional posts in the region aimed at ending the smuggling trade. In Alang there was a signal point and a guardhouse, intended to protect the entrance to the bay.
