Plan of the redoubt Leiden
Heneman, Johan Christoph van
Title Leupe: Plan van een versterkte Battery, by occasie van een verandering der Battery van de Redout Leyden.
Just as in the case of the redoubt Purmerend, it quickly became apparent that the redoubt Leiden was far too weak to offer any serious opposition to a naval attack through the mouth of the Suriname River. Improving the batteries of this redoubt hence became a serious concern within Heneman’s plan to build a Defence Cordon to protect the colony. In contrast to his collegue Wollant (see VEL2061-2063), Heneman designed multiple bastions and thus expected heavy investments to be made. Like Wollant’s plans, however, his plans were never executed. The Leiden redoubt remained unprotected on its northern side, and, along with the redoubt Purmerend, easily fell to British troops during an 1804 attack.
