This unsigned ground plan of Fort Nassau gives a good impression of the situation during or shortly after the total renovation of 1735-1740. On the basis of the compass rose, the scale bar and the handwriting, the plan can be attributed to the engineer and surveyor Jan Daniel Knapp. It was sent to the Republic in 1739. The ground floor is displayed here.
The map corresponds closely to the anonymous one on VEL1628. The latter was also sent back to the Republic in 1739, but in contrast shows which sections were done in wood (yellow) and brick (red). Brick tended to be confined to the innermost fort structures; the surrounding walls were made of earth but were furnished with heavy wooden poles on the outside. There is no indication that stone was used for the main gate (B in the plan) in the way suggested in the maps under VEL1628 and 1663A-D.
