Map of southern South America

The image shows a map of the southern end of South America from just north of the Strait of Magellan to the southern edge of Tierra del Fuego. In the Strait of Magellan several key points are labelled: points where the strait narrows, an island with many penguins and several capes. On the right we see the Strait Le Maire, the passage discovered by the expedition of Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten. They named the part of the mainland of Tierra del Fuego “Mauritius of Nassau” and the land to their right the “Statenland”, after the Dutch States General. They did not realize that this was an modestly-sized island, which is now called Isla de los Estados. The southern cape of Tierra del Fuego was named Cape Horn after the hometown of the expedition’s leadership. The line along the coast and into the Pacific shows the route sailed by Le Maire and Schouten.
