Coastline profiles of the atoll Pedro de Banhos and surrounding atolls, Chagos Archipelago

In November 1598, the Vriesland, part of the Second Expedition (Tweede Schipvaart) to the East Indies, came across three atolls, probably part of what is today known as the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. One of these, the atoll Pedro de Banhos, was named after a Poruguese who had lost his ship there. In his journal, Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck calls these islands 'Crabbelant'. Jolinck drew the islands from three directions, but was unable to discern which islands formed part of a single landmass and which were separate.
